Swedish Massage forms the basis of the contemporary Western approach to massage.
Swedish massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation with anatomical, physiological, and in some cases psychological purposes and goals. It is currently the most requested form of massage in spas followed closely by deep tissue bodywork.
The word massage comes from the Arabic massa meaning "to touch, feel or handle" or from massa meaning "mass, dough".
Lauterstein-Conway's Swedish massage training, from which many of the LMTs below graduated, includes an understanding of history, contraindications, body mechanics, basic strokes Swedish massage strokes such as effleurage, petrissage, friction, vibration, tapotement and Swedish massage movements. Special populations - pregnancy massage, geriatric massage, etc. - are also addressed.
TLCschool's approach is to be precise and thorough in teaching soft tissue manipulation, while cultivating mindfulness regarding the body, mind, and spirit of the client.
